How your bill is computed

  • Each taxing unit taxes your home's taxable value for that unit, which is the appraised value minus the exemptions that unit gives.
  • The unit's tax is that taxable value times its rate, divided by 100. A rate of $0.50 per $100 on $300,000 of taxable value is $1,500.
  • Your bill is the total for all of your units. On a homestead, the appraised value can be held below market value by the 10% yearly cap (Texas Tax Code §23.23).

Exemptions that lower it

  • School districts exempt $140,000 of a homestead's value (Texas Tax Code §11.13(b)).
  • Owners 65 or older or disabled get another $60,000 off the home's value for school taxes (§11.13(c)), and the school tax on their homestead stays at or below the amount for the year they qualified, except for new improvements (§11.26).
  • Counties, cities and other units choose their own homestead exemptions, such as a percentage of value or an amount for owners 65 or older or disabled, and some give none (§11.13).
  • Each exemption applies only once it is approved and on file with the appraisal district. Look up your address to see the exemptions on file for your home.
